The term 'Qi Gong' is pronounced as 'Chee Gune'. It may also be spelled as Chi Kung. Qi or Chi means 'energy'. Gong means 'work'. Hence, the direct translation is 'energy work'. The purpose of Qi Gong can be described as cultivating or harnessing energy.
There may be between 2,000 and 4,000 different styles of Qi Gong. Within each style, there are different sets of movements. Depending on the specific set, it may be done standing, sitting or lying down; stationary or moving; with or without tonality (sound).
In general, all Qi Gong exercises will increase your energy level. The different postures, movements and sounds allow you to draw, or absorb, the energy of the universe into your body. Some Qi Gong sets are specific to enhance the health and function of certain parts or systems of the body (ie. synovial fluid of the joints, lymphatic system, internal organs).
The basic applications if Qi Gong are:
1) Health
2) Longevity
3) Martial arts power
4) Spiritual enlightenment
In addition to good health, there are other benefits of practicing Qi Gong exercises. They are as follows:
-
No equipment or special clothing is required.
-
Most sets are short and therefore require a short time to memorize and perform.
-
Can be done by anyone, regardless of age and current health status.
-
Gives you a sense of calm and inner peace.
-
You get better at it as you get older!
Note: Qi Gong is taught as a part of our overall Tai Chi program. It is included in the warm-up and stretching portion of each class. Also, we have workshops, several times a year, that are devoted completely to the study and practice of Qi Gong.
Qi Gong workshops are also available to outside groups. If you are interested in having such a workshop, please go to the Contact Us page to request this information.
